After seven months in Western Australia and crossing the vast emptiness of the Nullarbor, we looked forward to finally exploring the Eyre Peninsula during our travels around Australia. On the map, it seemed a remote corner of South Australia, jutting into the Southern Ocean between Spencer Gulf and the Great Australian Bight.
I recently stood on the foreshore of Lake Alexandrina. The first thing you notice is how plain it can look. Not plain in the sense of dull, it’s still a vast, shining sheet of water, the kind of place that slows people down. But plain in the way a managed landscape becomes, once you’ve lived with it long enough.
